How to Prepare Your Vehicle for Auto Transport: A Step-by-Step Guide
Preparing your vehicle for auto transport can ensure a smooth and safe journey. By following these steps, you’ll help protect your car and avoid unnecessary delays or costs.
Step 1: Clean Your Vehicle
Cleaning your car may seem unnecessary, but it plays a crucial role in identifying pre-existing damage. Dirt or grime can hide dings and scratches, which will need to be recorded during inspection. A clean exterior ensures accurate documentation before your vehicle is loaded for transport.
Step 2: Remove Personal Items
Auto transport companies do not allow personal belongings in vehicles during transit unless pre-arranged with your shipping provider. Extra items can add weight and shift during the journey, potentially causing damage. Remove all valuables, and clear out any loose items such as phone chargers, GPS devices, or garage door openers.
Step 3: Remove Toll Devices (EZ Pass, SunPass, etc.)
Any toll devices, such as EZ Pass or SunPass, should be removed from your vehicle to avoid unnecessary charges while the vehicle is being transported. These devices can accidentally register charges as your car passes through toll zones. Store them safely in a bag or container outside the vehicle.
Step 4: Check Fluids and Battery
Your car must be in good working condition before being transported. Check for fluid leaks, and ensure all fluids are topped off, including engine oil, brake fluid, and transmission fluid. The battery should be securely mounted and fully charged.
Step 5: Fuel Level
Keep your fuel tank between 1/8 and 1/4 full. This amount is sufficient for loading and unloading your vehicle while minimizing the overall weight. Overfilling the tank is not recommended, as it could pose a hazard during transport.
Step 6: Disable Alarms
If your vehicle has an alarm system, disable it before transport. Alarms going off during the journey can cause unnecessary complications for the driver. Provide instructions for disarming if needed.
Step 7: Document Vehicle Condition
Take clear, detailed photos of your vehicle from all angles before shipment. This will serve as proof of its condition in case there are any damage claims upon delivery.
Step 8: Remove Custom or Loose Parts
If your vehicle has custom features like spoilers or bike racks, remove or secure them to prevent damage. Retract antennas and secure any loose exterior parts that could come off during transport.
